What is sex Therapy?
Therapy is provided in complete confidentiality and all the work is done fully clothed!! Sex therapy is a new, dynamic approach to very real human problems. It is based on the assumptions that sex is good, that relationships should be meaningful, and that interpersonal intimacy is a desirable goal. Sex Therapy is by its nature a very sensitive treatment modality and by necessity must include respect for the client's values. It must be non-judgmental and non-sexist, with recognition of the equal rights of man and woman to full expression and enjoyment of healthy sexual relationships.
Counselling/psychotherapy is offered to couples and individuals irrespective of their sexuality. Problems are normally resolved by means of discussion, the giving of appropriate information about human sexual functioning and by simple behavioural tasks, which are completed by clients in the privacy of their own home between sessions. The therapy has a very high success rate, although it does require commitment to following the treatment programme. On occasion a medical referral may be neccessary and this will be discussed with you and made only with your full understanding and consent.
What's involved
It really is not important to see your GP first... you can self-refer. Initially an assessment session is neccessary to establish the nature and history of your concerns. You may have already decided whether you want to attend alone or with your partner. Or if you are not quite sure it will be established during the assessment session whether one to one or couple counselling is the best option for you. During this assessment we establish a treatment goal and this is what we work towards achieving in our sessions.
Sex and relationship therapy is short-term; issues can usually be resolved in 6 to 10 sessions. It is best for you to attend weekly but it is understandable when work and family commitments dictate otherwise. There is some flexibility. But you are here to do the 'work' of sex and relationship therapy so a commitment is essential to successful outcome.
The assessment also provides you with the opportunity to assess your therapist and to make a decision whether you would like to return. There is no obligation to do so at this stage.
